Overview

Renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) are specialized epithelial cells lining the renal tubules of the nephron, where they are essential for reabsorbing water, electrolytes, glucose, and nutrients from the glomerular filtrate, maintaining acid-base balance, and secreting waste and xenobiotics. These cells play key roles in kidney homeostasis, adapt metabolic pathways in response to injury, and are central to the repair and regeneration of kidney tissue after acute injury[9][3][6]. RTECs can also mediate immune responses within the kidney and are involved in the pathogenesis of various kidney diseases, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and tubulointerstitial fibrosis[1][3][6]. Recent research highlights their function in fluid transport, signaling, and their vulnerability as well as potential for repair after damage[4][9][3]. Critical note: “Renal tubular epithelium” refers to a cell type/tissue layer, not a specific druggable molecule or classical biological target such as a receptor, transporter, ion channel, or enzyme. Therefore, it is not considered a therapeutic target in the standard sense, although various molecular entities within these cells (such as megalin, sodium-potassium ATPase, or injury biomarkers) may be drug targets or therapeutic biomarkers themselves[2][9]. This entry is considered incorrect as a target by molecular pharmacology conventions.
