Renal tubular organic anion transporters (OATs) are a group of membrane proteins primarily expressed in the proximal tubules of the kidney. They play a crucial role in the active secretion and reabsorption of a wide variety of endogenous and exogenous organic anions, including metabolic waste products, drugs, toxins, and signaling molecules. These transporters are part of the solute carrier 22 (SLC22) family. Key members include OAT1, OAT3, OAT4, and URAT1, which are located on the basolateral and apical membranes of proximal tubule cells. They mediate transcellular movement of small organic anions across epithelial barriers, influencing the elimination or reclamation of metabolic by-products, drugs, environmental toxins, and hormones. Their activity determines how efficiently many drugs and toxins are cleared from circulation, impacting drug pharmacokinetics, toxicity profiles, and systemic homeostasis.
