Overview

The renal tubular system refers to the series of connected tubules within the nephron—the functional unit of the kidney—not a single molecule or receptor. This system includes the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule, and collecting duct. Each segment is lined by specialized epithelial cells with distinct sets of transporters and channels responsible for reabsorption of water, electrolytes, nutrients, and secretion of waste or excess ions. The combined functions of these segments are essential for maintaining fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance, and for the formation of urine. The renal tubular system is affected in various diseases (e.g., tubulopathies, renal tubular acidosis), and it is the site of action for several classes of diuretics and acid-base-altering drugs[1][3][4].
