The renal tubule is a long and convoluted anatomical structure forming part of each nephron—the basic functional unit in the kidney. It consists primarily of three main segments—proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule—which sequentially process glomerular filtrate through reabsorption and secretion. The primary functions are to reclaim essential nutrients/electrolytes/water back into circulation while secreting waste products into urine. Each segment contains specialized epithelial cells expressing distinct sets of transporters and enzymes that mediate these processes via active/passive transport mechanisms. Dysfunction or genetic defects affecting proteins expressed in these regions can result in inherited or acquired diseases known as “tubulopathies.” The term “renal tubule” does not refer to any single therapeutic target but encompasses numerous potential drug targets located along its length.
