Overview

The renal tubule is a key structure within the nephron of the kidney responsible for reabsorbing water and solutes from the filtrate. Osmotic diuresis is increased urine output caused by nonreabsorbed, osmotically active substances in the renal tubule, drawing water into the lumen and reducing water reabsorption. Substances like mannitol or high glucose levels cause osmotic diuresis affecting the proximal convoluted tubule, descending limb of Henle, and collecting ducts. This process leads to impaired reabsorption of water and electrolytes such as sodium, chloride, and potassium.
