Target intelligence / Profile preview
Replenishing Qi, or 'Bu Qi' in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a therapeutic principle rather than a specific molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme. It describes the pharmacological action of restoring the body's 'vital energy,' which is characterized in modern scientific terms as the optimization of energy metabolism, particularly via mitochondrial function and ATP synthesis (Luo et al., 2019, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Qi-tonifying agents, primarily derived from medicinal plants like Panax ginseng and Astragalus membranaceus, exert polypharmacological effects by modulating the immune system and the endocrine stress response through the HPA axis. In clinical practice, Replenishing Qi is used to treat 'Qi deficiency,' a state manifesting as chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, and weakened immunity. Research suggests these effects are mediated through signaling pathways such as AMPK and MAPK, which regulate cellular energy homeostasis and antioxidant defenses (PubMed Central, PMC6433201). Because it represents a broad physiological outcome resulting from multi-component herbal mixtures, it is not considered a valid singular target for conventional small-molecule drug development but remains a central concept in integrative medicine and ethnopharmacology.
The mechanism involves systemic enhancement of mitochondrial ATP production, modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and stimulation of cytokine production (e.g., IL-2, IFN-gamma) to improve immune surveillance and metabolic vigor (Li et al., 2018, Journal of Ethnopharmacology; Pu et al., 2020, Frontiers in Pharmacology).
