Overview

Reproductive hormone regulation refers to the integrated physiological system, primarily the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, that controls sexual development and reproductive function (StatPearls, 2022). This process begins with the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, which stimulates the anterior pituitary to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (NIH, 2021). These gonadotropins act on the gonads to promote the production of gametes and sex steroids like estrogen and testosterone, which in turn provide feedback to the brain to maintain homeostasis. Dysregulation of this regulatory network is a hallmark of various clinical conditions, including infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hormone-sensitive malignancies such as prostate and breast cancer (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
