Resistin-like molecule beta (RELM-β) is a small, cysteine-rich secreted cytokine predominantly expressed by goblet cells and epithelial cells in the colon. It is a member of the resistin-like molecule family, sharing sequence structure with resistin and other RELMs. Functionally, RELM-β is implicated in maintenance of colonic barrier function, modulation of innate immunity, and regulation of susceptibility to colonic inflammation. It displays host-protective roles against intestinal nematode infections and affects the expression of immune regulatory genes, such as members of the REG3 family. Human and rodent RELM-β are selectively expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, especially the colon, and upregulated in inflammatory conditions and some cancers. While its receptors are not fully characterized, RELM-β is recognized as a relevant immunoregulatory molecule and a potential research target for gut-related inflammatory diseases.
