Resolving exterior and interior

01

Overview

'Resolving exterior and interior' is a traditional therapeutic strategy, primarily found in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and does not represent a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme (World Health Organization International Standard Terminologies, 2007). This principle is applied when a patient exhibits a 'combined pattern' of illness, where pathological factors simultaneously affect both the superficial levels of the body (exterior, such as the skin and muscles) and the internal organ systems (interior). It is classically associated with the management of the 'Shaoyang' syndrome and the 'Jie Biao Gong Li' approach in traditional texts like the Shanghan Lun (Wiseman & Ellis, 1996). Modern pharmacological research focuses on the multi-target effects of herbal formulas like Xiao Chai Hu Tang or Fang Feng Tong Sheng San, which utilize active constituents such as saikosaponins and baicalin to modulate the immune system and reduce systemic inflammation (Li et al., 2011). These interventions are thought to restore homeostasis by regulating cytokine networks and the neuro-endocrine-immune axis rather than targeting a single biochemical entity. Consequently, while it is a recognized medical methodology, it is not a canonical drug target in the context of molecular pharmacology.
