Airway Mucus (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Extracellular matrix component, Complex mixture, Glycoprotein aggregate
01

Overview

Airway mucus is a complex, gel-like secretion lining the respiratory tract, composed of water, ions, mucins, cells, and other macromolecules. It protects the lungs by trapping inhaled particles and facilitating their removal via mucociliary clearance or cough. Dysfunction, such as overproduction or increased viscosity, is associated with chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis, leading to cough, dyspnea, and increased risk of infection.
