These pathogens are responsible for a wide range of clinical manifestations, from mild upper respiratory tract infections like the common cold to severe lower respiratory tract diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis (WHO, 2022). Rather than being a single molecular target, respiratory pathogens is a category of biological agents that contain numerous individual drug targets, such as penicillin-binding proteins in bacteria or neuraminidase in influenza viruses (NCBI, 2021). Treatment strategies are diverse, employing antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals to inhibit essential microbial processes like cell wall synthesis or genome replication. The clinical management of these infections is increasingly challenged by the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, necessitating precise diagnostic identification and stewardship (CDC, 2022). Consequently, this term is used to describe a group of infectious agents rather than a specific protein or receptor suitable for targeted drug design. Effective therapeutic intervention depends on the specific pathogen's biology, making the broad category an inappropriate descriptor for a single drug target.
