Overview

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, highly contagious respiratory virus that primarily infects the nose, throat, lungs, and breathing passages. It is specific and pathogenic for humans and targets cells along the entire human respiratory tract—from the upper airways to the lungs. Infection leads to inflammation characterized by monocyte/T-cell infiltration, epithelial necrosis, submucosal edema, mucus overproduction, patchy tissue damage with airway obstruction due to sloughed epithelium and mucus plugs. Syncytia formation may occur—especially in immunocompromised patients—due to cell fusion mediated by F protein.
