Respiratory Syncytial Virus Glycoprotein (RSV Glycoprotein)

Target
RSV Glycoprotein
Molecular classification
Viral envelope glycoprotein, Type II transmembrane glycoprotein (G protein), Class I viral fusion protein (F protein)
01

Overview

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) possesses two major surface glycoproteins critical for its infectivity: the attachment glycoprotein (G) and the fusion glycoprotein (F). These proteins mediate the initial steps of viral infection, including host cell recognition, attachment, and membrane fusion. The G protein binds to heparan sulfate and CX3CR1 to attach to host cells and modulate immune responses. The F protein mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with the target cell membrane. Both proteins are major targets for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine development.

Mechanism of action

Neutralizing antibodies block viral attachment (G protein) or membrane fusion (F protein). Antiviral drugs inhibit F protein function.
