The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) glycoprotein F, commonly referred to as the fusion (F) protein, is a type I integral membrane protein found on the surface of RSV virions. It plays a central role in viral entry by mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, allowing viral RNA to enter target cells. The mature RSV F glycoprotein is organized as a homotrimer composed of three non-covalently associated protomers, each consisting of an F1 and an F2 subunit. RSV F exists in two major conformations: pre-fusion and post-fusion. It is a major antigen recognized by neutralizing antibodies and an important target for antiviral drug development against RSV.
