Respiratory syncytial virus L protein polymerase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase
01

Overview

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) L protein is a large, multifunctional enzyme that serves as the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). It is essential for RSV genome replication and transcription, making it a critical target for antiviral drug development. The RSV L protein catalyzes all enzymatic activities required for viral RNA synthesis: RNA-dependent RNA polymerization, capping, methylation, and polyadenylation. These functions are coordinated in an "assembly line" fashion within the same polypeptide. It forms an active complex with the phosphoprotein P and nucleoprotein N.
