Respiratory Syncytial Virus Nucleoprotein (N)

Target
N
Molecular classification
Structural protein, Viral protein, RNA-binding protein
01

Overview

The nucleoprotein (N) of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly conserved structural protein essential for the virus's life cycle. It encapsidates the viral RNA genome, forming a left-handed helical nucleocapsid that protects the RNA from degradation by nucleases and serves as the template for both transcription and replication by the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex. The N protein also plays a role in immune evasion by sequestering host immune signaling proteins and is important for virus assembly. It is a target for antiviral drug development.
