The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) polymerase is a multifunctional enzyme complex essential for RSV genome replication and transcription. It is composed primarily of two proteins: the large (L) protein, which serves as the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and the tetrameric phosphoprotein (P), which acts as an essential cofactor. The polymerase complex binds to the viral genomic RNA at specific promoter sites to initiate either genome replication or mRNA synthesis. Inhibitors targeting various functions within this complex are under clinical development.
