The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) prefusion F protein is a viral fusion glycoprotein that mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, enabling viral entry. It exists in a metastable prefusion (pre-F) form and a stable postfusion (post-F) form. The pre-F conformation displays unique antigenic sites (Site Ø and Site V) that elicit potent neutralizing antibodies, making it a prime target for RSV vaccine development. Stabilized pre-F proteins are used in vaccine formulations to stimulate robust humoral immunity.
