Overview

The respiratory tract mucosa is a specialized lining that covers much of the respiratory system, from the nasal cavity to the bronchioles. It consists of pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium (in upper regions) with goblet cells, a basement membrane, and a lamina propria containing blood vessels and seromucosal glands. Its primary functions include protection against pathogens and foreign particles, trapping particulates in mucus, warming and humidifying inhaled air, and removing debris-laden mucus via ciliary action. Disruption of the respiratory tract mucosa can lead to increased susceptibility to infections, allergic reactions, or impaired clearance mechanisms.
