Respiratory Tract Mucus (Mucus)

Target
Mucus
Molecular classification
Mixture, Secretion, Glycoprotein Mixture
01

Overview

Mucus in the respiratory tract is a gel-like secretion produced by goblet cells and submucosal glands lining the airways. It acts as a physical barrier, traps inhaled particles and pathogens, contains antimicrobial substances, keeps airway surfaces moist, and enables mucociliary clearance. Dysfunctional mucus production or composition is linked to major pulmonary diseases.
