Overview

Respiratory tract secretions, commonly referred to as mucus, are a complex gel-like substance produced by the epithelial lining of the airways. Mucus plays a critical role in protecting the respiratory system by trapping inhaled particles, pathogens, and facilitating their removal via mucociliary clearance. The major components include water and mucins (MUC5AC and MUC5B). Alterations in mucus composition or rheology can lead to disease states where thickened or excessive mucus impairs airway clearance, increasing infection risk or airflow obstruction.
