Ret finger protein like 4A pseudogene 1 (RFPL4AP1) is a processed pseudogene located on human chromosome 19. Unlike protein-coding genes, pseudogenes like RFPL4AP1 lack the ability to encode functional proteins but may regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally, for example, by acting as microRNA sponges or competitive endogenous RNAs. Recent studies have shown that RFPL4AP1 is upregulated in gliomas, where elevated expression correlates with tumor grade, malignancy, immune infiltration, and poorer patient prognosis. Knockdown of RFPL4AP1 can inhibit the proliferation and invasion of glioma cells, suggesting a functional role for its RNA transcript in tumor biology. RFPL4AP1 is not targeted by any known drugs and is used primarily as a research biomarker.
