Reticulocyte-binding protein homolog 5 (RH5), also known as PfRH5, is a key protein expressed by the malaria parasite *Plasmodium falciparum*. It plays an essential role in the invasion of human erythrocytes (red blood cells) during the blood stage of malaria infection. Unlike other members of its family, RH5 is indispensable for parasite survival and is highly conserved across different *P. falciparum* strains. RH5 functions as an invasion ligand that enables merozoites to enter human erythrocytes through a specific interaction with its host receptor, basigin (CD147), on the surface of red blood cells. Due to its essential function and low sequence diversity, RH5 has become a leading candidate for next-generation blood-stage malaria vaccines.
