Reticuloendothelial cells are a heterogeneous group of phagocytic cells that form the core components of the reticuloendothelial system (RES), also known as the mononuclear phagocyte system. These cells, including macrophages (Kupffer cells, microglia, alveolar macrophages) and scavenger endothelial cells, are primarily responsible for clearing foreign particles, pathogens, and cellular debris from blood and tissues through phagocytosis. They also play a crucial role in immune regulation, iron recycling, and modulating immune responses.
