Reticuloendothelial Cell Phagocytosis (RES Phagocytosis)

Target
RES Phagocytosis
Molecular classification
Cellular Process, Immune Process, Phagocytosis, Innate Immunity
01

Overview

Reticuloendothelial cell phagocytosis is the process by which specialized cells of the reticuloendothelial system (RES), primarily macrophages and monocytes, engulf and remove foreign particles, pathogens, cellular debris, and other substances from the blood and tissues. This function is a critical component of innate immunity and tissue homeostasis. Altered RES function has implications for infectious disease susceptibility, immune complex diseases and cancer.

02

Mechanism of action

Phagocytic cells recognize targets via pattern recognition receptors or opsonins. Upon recognition, cells engulf particles through cytoskeletal rearrangement forming a phagosome. The internalized material is degraded within lysosomes.
