Overview

The reticuloendothelial system (RES), also known as the mononuclear phagocyte system, is a network of specialized cells primarily responsible for the clearance of foreign particles, pathogens, and cellular debris from the bloodstream and tissues. It comprises macrophages, monocytes, and specialized endothelial cells, predominantly found in the liver (Kupffer cells), spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow, and lungs. The RES plays a crucial role in phagocytosis, immune regulation, and clearance of various substances. Dysfunction or overload of the RES can occur in conditions such as sepsis and trauma. In drug delivery, the RES often leads to rapid sequestration of nanoparticles, posing a challenge for targeted therapies.
