The **retina** is the innermost light-sensitive layer of tissue in the eye of vertebrates and some molluscs. It functions analogously to film or an image sensor in a camera by receiving focused images from the optics of the eye. The retina processes these images and sends nerve impulses via the optic nerve to the visual cortex for interpretation as vision. Structurally, it consists of multiple layers including photoreceptor cells—rods for low-light vision and cones for color and high-acuity vision—as well as supporting neurons such as bipolar cells and ganglion cells. The retinal pigment epithelium supports neural function and prevents light scatter within the eye[1][2]. **Note:** "Retina tissue" refers to an anatomical structure composed of many cell types rather than a specific molecule or receptor. It is not considered a therapeutic target like receptors or enzymes; instead, individual proteins within retinal cells may serve as drug targets[1][2].
