Retina Photoreceptor Cell

Molecular classification
Neuron, Sensory receptor cell
01

Overview

Retina photoreceptor cells are specialized, light-sensitive neurons located in the retina of the eye. Their primary function is to detect and transduce light into electrical signals, which are then processed by the nervous system to create visual perception. There are three main types: rod cells (low-light vision), cone cells (color and high-acuity vision), and photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (non-image-forming responses like circadian rhythm regulation). Dysfunction or degeneration of these cell types underlies many forms of inherited blindness or acquired retinal disease.
