Overview

The retinal cell plasma membrane is the specialized lipid bilayer that delimits the various cell types within the retina, including photoreceptors, bipolar cells, and ganglion cells. It serves as the essential structural platform for numerous proteins involved in the visual cycle, such as rhodopsin and various ion channels (StatPearls, 2023). This membrane is critical for maintaining the electrochemical gradients necessary for signal transduction and for facilitating communication between retinal neurons and the underlying retinal pigment epithelium (Progress in Retinal and Eye Research, 2017). While not a single therapeutic target, its composition and integrity are often altered in degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2014). Pharmacological interventions typically focus on specific receptors or transporters embedded within this membrane rather than the membrane itself. Understanding its biophysical properties is vital for the design of ocular drug delivery systems that must traverse or interact with these cellular boundaries (Journal of Controlled Release, 2020).
