Overview

Retinal contrast modulation refers to a set of physiological phenomena by which retinal circuits—most notably photoreceptors, bipolar cells, amacrine cells, and ganglion cells—dynamically adjust their responses to varying levels and patterns of stimulus contrast in the visual scene. Mechanisms include gain adaptation, contrast gain-control, and sensitization, operating across multiple retinal cell types and on different time scales. These adaptations optimize the encoding of visual information across changing environments and prevent saturation or loss of sensitivity. Modulation of contrast sensitivity in the retina is critical for efficient visual processing but does not refer to a distinct protein, gene, enzyme, transporter, or receptor suitable as a direct therapeutic target[1][2][3]. Rather, it is an emergent property of cellular and network-level adaptation involving, among others, hyperpolarization-activated currents in photoreceptors and synaptic mechanisms in bipolar and ganglion cells.
