Overview

Retinal ganglion cells are the primary output neurons of the retina, integrating visual signals from photoreceptors via intermediate neurons and transmitting this information to central visual processing areas through the optic nerve. There are more than 40 distinct subtypes of RGCs, each defined by unique morphology, molecular profile, and functional role. They play essential roles in image-forming vision, circadian rhythm regulation (in the case of intrinsically photosensitive RGCs), and various visual reflexes. RGC loss is a central feature in glaucomatous optic neuropathy and other optic nerve diseases. While numerous molecular markers can identify RGC subpopulations, the "retinal ganglion cell pathway" itself is not a single druggable entity but a collective reference to this neuron population’s relay function and circuits in the visual system.
