Retinal Photoreceptor Cell Replacement

Molecular classification
Cell Therapy, Regenerative Medicine
01

Overview

Retinal photoreceptor cell replacement is a therapeutic strategy aimed at restoring vision lost due to the degeneration or death of photoreceptors in the retina. Photoreceptors are specialized neurons (rods and cones) responsible for detecting light and converting it into electrical signals. Cell-based therapies, particularly those involving transplantation of healthy photoreceptor cells, are being developed as potential treatments for blinding retinal diseases.

02

Mechanism of action

Transplanted donor-derived immature or precursor photoreceptor cells integrate into the host retina, forming synaptic connections with existing retinal circuitry and restoring some degree of visual function by replacing lost or dysfunctional native photoreceptors.
