Overview

The **retinal pigment epithelial cell** (RPE cell) is a highly specialized, pigmented epithelial cell forming a monolayer at the outermost layer of the retina, situated between the neural retina and the choroid. These cells perform essential roles in ocular physiology: they phagocytose photoreceptor outer segment debris, recycle vitamin A derivatives for the visual cycle, mediate selective transport of nutrients and ions, maintain the blood-retinal barrier, absorb stray light via melanin to protect the retina, and secrete growth factors and immunomodulatory substances. Dysfunction or loss of RPE cells is central in the pathology of multiple blinding retinal diseases.
