Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cell Migration (RPE Migration)

RPE Migration
Molecular classification

01

Overview

Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell migration refers to the movement of RPE cells, a process critical for retinal maintenance, repair after injury, and implicated in various retinal diseases. RPE cells form a monolayer between the neural retina and choroid, supporting photoreceptor function and maintaining the blood-retina barrier. While necessary for repair, abnormal or excessive migration is associated with pathologies such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Key pathways involved include EMT, TGF-β/BMP signaling, Wnt signaling, EGFR/PI3K/AKT pathway, PKC, and autophagy. Regulatory factors include high glucose, palmitic acid, and junctional protein loss.
