Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cell Tight Junctions (RPE Tight Junctions)

Target
RPE Tight Junctions
Molecular classification
Cell Junction, Multi-protein complex
01

Overview

Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell tight junctions are essential molecular complexes that form the outer blood-retinal barrier (oBRB), a selectively permeable barrier at the interface between the neural retina and the choroid. They are composed of claudins, occludin, junctional adhesion molecules (JAMs), and zonula occludens (ZO) proteins, and their dynamic regulation ensures proper retinal environment maintenance crucial for vision health. Disruption impairs this protective role, leading directly to disease processes affecting vision quality.
