Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE)

Target
RPE
Molecular classification
Epithelial cells, Tissue

Overview

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a single layer of pigmented, hexagonal epithelial cells located between the neurosensory retina and the underlying choroid. It forms a critical barrier and interface, playing essential roles in supporting photoreceptor function and overall visual health. Its functions include phagocytosis of photoreceptor outer segments, nutrient/waste transport, light absorption, participation in the visual cycle, and barrier formation. Dysfunction or degeneration of RPE underlies many blinding diseases.
