Retinaldehyde Binding Protein 1 (RLBP1), also known as cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein (CRALBP), is a water-soluble carrier protein essential for the proper function of rod and cone photoreceptors in the retina. It binds and transports 11-cis-retinal and 11-cis-retinol, critical intermediates in the visual cycle, facilitating the enzymatic isomerization of all-trans-retinal to 11-cis-retinal, supporting regeneration of visual pigments necessary for vision. Mutations in RLBP1 cause several autosomal recessive retinal degenerative diseases.
