Retinoic acid-inducible gene I protein (RIG-I) is a cytosolic pattern recognition receptor (PRR) that plays a central role in the innate immune response to viral infections. It is encoded by the DDX58 gene and recognizes viral RNA with specific features, triggering downstream signaling cascades that result in type I interferon production and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression. While primarily known for antiviral defense, RIG-I also participates in inflammation regulation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis, suggesting involvement in cancer biology and other non-infectious diseases.
