Overview

Retinoic Acid Receptor Alpha (RAR-α) is a nuclear hormone receptor and ligand-activated transcription factor encoded by the RARA gene. It plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression involved in cell differentiation, growth, hematopoiesis, spermatogenesis, and skeletal development. RAR-α heterodimerizes with RXR and binds to RAREs on DNA, modulating transcription in response to retinoid ligands. Aberrant RARA function, particularly through chromosomal translocations in acute promyelocytic leukemia, can disrupt normal cellular processes.
