Retinol-binding protein 5 (RBP5) is a member of the intracellular lipocalin family of retinoid-binding proteins, primarily responsible for the intracellular transport of retinol (vitamin A alcohol) and fatty acids. It is highly expressed in the kidney and liver, and contributes to the cellular uptake, trafficking, and metabolism of retinol, supporting retinoid homeostasis by controlling substrate delivery to enzymes involved in vitamin A metabolism. Though its biological functions overlap with other cellular retinoid binding proteins (notably CRBP1 and CRBP2), RBP5’s physiological and pathophysiological roles, including its exact ligands and tissue-specific actions, remain less well characterized. Changes in expression of this protein may impact metabolic processes such as glucose and energy metabolism, and have been linked to disease susceptibility including some forms of cancer. Currently, there are no drugs reported to specifically target RBP5, nor is it a therapeutic target per se[1][2][4].
