RETREG1-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA

Overview

RETREG1 antisense RNA 1 is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed opposite to the RETREG1 (FAM134B) gene locus. The primary presumed function of RETREG1-AS1 is regulation of its sense counterpart RETREG1, a key protein involved in reticulophagy—selective autophagy of the endoplasmic reticulum—and neuronal survival[7]. Like other antisense RNAs, RETREG1-AS1 likely modulates gene expression post-transcriptionally, possibly by hybridizing to RETREG1 mRNA to affect its stability, translation, or splicing, or by recruiting epigenetic modifiers[2][7][12]. There is no current evidence of direct drug targeting, clinical biomarker relevance, or safety issues for RETREG1-AS1, and its specific molecular and disease roles remain to be clarified. Its expression and functional regulation may be important in conditions linked to RETREG1, such as hereditary neuropathies[1][4][7], but it is not considered a classical drug target.
