Overview

Retrotransposon Gag-like protein 10 (RTL10) is a protein-coding gene in humans originally derived from long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon Gag sequences[2]. It is a member of the retrotransposon Gag-like (RTL/SIRH) family, which consists of domesticated retrotransposon or retroviral gene products[2]. RTL10 participates in mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization and the regulation of mitochondrial membrane potential, important processes in the intrinsic apoptotic pathway[1]. The protein may induce apoptosis through its BH3 domain, possibly interacting with members of the Bcl-2 family to modulate apoptotic signaling[1]. RTL10 is localized to the mitochondria[1]. Disease associations include autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome and certain leukemias based on gene variant and expression data, but it is not widely regarded as a direct therapeutic target and there are no drugs in clinical use or development targeting RTL10[1][2].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; no drugs are reported to target this molecule. The protein itself may induce apoptosis through a BH3-domain-dependent mechanism, potentially by interacting with Bcl-2 family members at the mitochondrial membrane
