Overview

Retrotransposon Gag-like protein 4 (RTL4) is a protein encoded by the RTL4 gene in humans. It is a member of the Mar/Mart family of retrotransposon-derived genes, related to long terminal repeat retrotransposons, but does not correspond to an active transposable element. RTL4 is predicted to bind nucleic acids and zinc ions, and may play a role in cognitive function in the brain through pathways involving the noradrenergic system. Its main molecular characteristics include a zinc finger CCHC domain, which is typically involved in nucleic acid binding. Mutations or dysfunction of RTL4 have been associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease 30, but the gene is not considered a validated therapeutic target. There are no known drugs or specific biomarkers for RTL4 at this time, and its safety or therapeutic profile is not established in clinical contexts
