The hepatitis B virus (HBV) polymerase, also known as reverse transcriptase (RT), is a multifunctional viral enzyme essential for HBV replication. It catalyzes the conversion of pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) into partially double-stranded DNA within the viral capsid. Current therapies target the RT activity, but ongoing research aims to develop inhibitors against additional functional domains like the RNase H domain to overcome resistance and improve treatment outcomes. The enzyme contains Terminal Protein, Spacer, RT, and RNase H domains.
