Target intelligence / Profile preview
The RhD antigen is a highly immunogenic protein found on the surface of red blood cells. Its presence or absence determines whether an individual is classified as RhD positive or RhD negative. While its precise physiological function is not fully understood, it may play a role in gas transport across the red cell membrane. Its primary clinical significance lies in its role in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) due to maternal anti-D antibodies.
