The Rhesus D antigen (RhD) is a protein molecule found on the surface of red blood cells. Its presence or absence determines whether an individual is classified as RhD positive or RhD negative, which is a key component of the ABO/Rh blood group system. It plays a crucial role in transfusion medicine and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). While its precise physiological function remains unclear, evidence suggests that together with associated proteins like RHAG, it may play roles in ammonium or carbon dioxide transport across erythrocyte membranes.
