The Rhesus factor type D antigen (RhD antigen) is a protein found on the surface of red blood cells. Its presence or absence determines Rh-positive or Rh-negative blood type. It is highly immunogenic, and exposure of Rh-negative individuals to RhD-positive blood can lead to the production of anti-D antibodies, resulting in transfusion reactions or hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). While its precise physiological function is uncertain, it is structurally related to ammonia transporters and may be involved in transporting ammonium or carbon dioxide.
Rh immunoglobulin (RhoGAM) binds to RhD-positive fetal red blood cells in the maternal circulation, preventing the mother from producing anti-D antibodies.
