Overview

Rhox homeobox family member 1 pseudogene 1 (RHOXF1P1), also known as TCONS_00017086, is a human pseudogene related to the Rhox homeobox transcription factor gene cluster. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but typically lack protein-coding capacity due to disabling mutations, such as frameshifts or premature stop codons[1]. While once described as "junk DNA," some pseudogenes are transcribed and can modulate gene expression, usually via RNA-mediated mechanisms such as competitive endogenous RNA activity[1][3]. RHOXF1P1 itself is not known to encode a functional protein or to serve as a direct therapeutic target. It belongs to the homeobox gene family, which in functional forms regulates development and differentiation, particularly in reproductive tissues, but as a pseudogene, RHOXF1P1 lacks this protein-coding function[4]. Pseudogenes like RHOXF1P1 were classically thought to be nonfunctional; however, some may have regulatory RNA roles or act as genetic elements influencing gene expression[1][3]. The Rhox gene cluster consists of homeobox transcription factors important in reproduction, but RHOXF1P1 is a nonfunctional, pseudogenized member, and there is no evidence it is a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other canonical drug target[2][4].
