Overview

RIBC1 (RIB43A domain with coiled-coils 1) is a protein encoded by the human RIBC1 gene and is characterized by the presence of a RIB43A domain and predicted coiled-coil structural features[4]. It is homologous to a family of microtubule inner proteins (MIPs) known to localize in the inner lumen of doublet microtubules in cilia and flagella of unicellular organisms and mammals[1][3]. In mouse models, RIBC1, together with RIBC2, contributes to sperm flagellar motility but is not alone critical for male fertility unless both homologs are deleted[1]. The precise function in mammalian or human cells remains to be defined, but its primary association is structural, linked to ciliary and flagellar architecture, and, by extension, potentially to microtubule organization[1][2][3]. There is currently no evidence that RIBC1 serves as a disease biomarker, drug target, or is directly linked to human pathologies.

Biological functions

Regulation of sperm flagellar motilityPotential role in flagellar structure and microtubule inner protein composition, based on homology and colocalization studies in cilia/flagella of model organisms
04

Disease associations

OtherThere is no direct evidence linking RIBC1 to specific diseases in humans as of now. Loss of both RIBC1 and its homolog RIBC2 in mice is associated with reduced sperm motility and decreased pup numbers, suggesting a potential reproductive role
