Riboflavin kinase pseudogene 1 (RFKP1) is an annotated human pseudogene related by sequence to riboflavin kinase enzymes, which are responsible for the phosphorylation of riboflavin (vitamin B2) to form flavin mononucleotide (FMN) as part of cellular metabolism[1][4][9]. However, RFKP1 does not encode a functional enzyme or protein; it is a non-functional genetic relic, often arising from duplication or mutation events that disable the original coding sequence. Consequently, RFKP1 is not expressed as an active protein and does not contribute to metabolic processes or serve as a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes such as RFKP1 may appear in genomic analyses but are excluded from consideration for drug discovery and disease association unless they acquire novel regulatory roles or are misannotated[1][4][9]. Other riboflavin kinase proteins (related, but NOT RFKP1) are active enzymes (e.g., RFK) with important metabolic, disease, and drug relevance[7][8], but this does not apply to RFKP1. RFKP1 is not a canonical drug target, does not code for a functional molecule, and its inclusion in therapeutic target lists would be considered a misannotation or error[1][4][9].
